Vasi Naganathan is the immediate past president of the Australian New Zealand Society of Geriatric Medicine which has 1200 members from across the two countries. He is also Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, a Consultant Geriatrician at Concord Hospital in Sydney and the Co-Director of the Centre of Education and Research on Ageing (CERA).
Vasi's research interests are wide including: health of older men, oral health, falls, fractures and osteoporosis, pharmacology in the elderly and the application of evidence-based medicine to older people. He is author of more than 270 publications and has attracted more than $10.0M in NHMRC competitive research funds. Vasi collaborates with and exchanges ideas with some of Australia’s leading researchers and specialists in Geriatric Medicine and Ageing Research. Vasi’s clinical work mainly involves looking after patients on the acute Geriatric Medicine and Rehabilitation wards. He also does a monthly 2 days clinic in regional NSW where he lived for a few years during high school years. Vasi is of Sri Lankan background, born in England, attending primary school in Singapore and has lived in Australia since the beginning of his high school education. |
The Challenges Ahead - An Australasian Perspective
There are major challenges ahead for Geriatric Medicine Services in Australia. These include: a. Variation in Geriatric Medicine Services and models of care between State and Territories in Australia and metropolitan vs regional/rural regions, b. Primary Care resources are stretched and c. Aged Care System in the Community and Residential Care are undergoing a number of changes.
This talk will show some results of a survey of Heads of Geriatric Medicine Departments about Services Provided by Geriatric Medicine Departments in Australia and New Zealand. I will also discuss some of the innovative models of care that have been developed in Australia, particularly to do with out of hospital models of care and facilitate a discussion on how we might meet some of the challenges ahead.
