I am a Geriatrician & General Physician, working at Te Toka Tumai Auckland in my current role since 2011. I am of the Rongowhakaata and Aitanga a mahaki Iwi. I have worked with a team on the Kaumātuatanga ō Te Roro (The Ageing Brain) study to investigate and describe mātauranga (understanding) of mate wareware (dementia) for Māori. The MANA cognitive tool is developed from this research. I am currently an investigator on two dementia prevalence studies in Aotearoa NZ.

Mate Wareware: Understanding Dementia from a Māori Perspective, including the Mana Tool
I will discuss understanding mate wareware (dementia) from a Māori perspective, and the MANA tool.
The Tūhononga Whaiaro framework was developed from the Kaumātuatanga ō Te Roro (The Ageing Brain) study, and has helped guide the development of the MANA Tool. This comprises two overarching themes, namely, connection (Tūhononga) and self (Whaiaro). There are eight subthemes: mind (hinengaro), spirit (wairua), body (tinana), family (whānau), social connection (whanaungatanga), identity and role (tuakiri), place (wāhi), and ancestors (tūpuna). Māori language (Te Reo Māori) was found to be important for cognitive health.
