“E kore au e ngaro, he kākano i ruia mai i Rangiātea.”
“I will never be lost, for I am the seed which was sown from Rangiātea.” Tēnā koutou katoa, Ko wai au? Ko Tainui, ko Te Arawa oku waka, Ko Taupiri, ko Putangimaru, Ko Weraiti oku maunga, Ko Waikato, Ko Mangapiko, Ko Waihou oku awa, Ko Turangawaewae, Ko Waahi, Ko Hinerangi Tāwhaki oku marae, Ko Ngāti Koroki, Ko Ngāti Tokotoko oku hapū, Ko Waikato, Ko Ngāti Hinerangi oku iwi. Ko Hinerangi Wirihana ahau. Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa! |
Born and raised by both my Pāpā and Kuia in Waikato and Okauia (small rural area at the foothills of the Kaimai ranges), I developed a deep connection with my own whakapapa(genealogy), whenua (land), marae (a sacred meeting place), whānau (family), hapū and iwi (group of peoples). I have lived and worked as a Social Worker and Community Support Worker in Ahuriri (Napier) and the wider Hawkes Bay area for over 10 years. I have two adult children who live in the area with their partners. The most precious taonga (treasures) of all is the arrival of my first mokopuna (grandchild) in the coming months. “Nei rā te mihi maioha aroha kia koe taku kuru pounamu”. – “Greetings to you my precious adornment”.
Finally, acknowledgement of my tūpuna (ancestors) for setting the foundations and paving the way of my journey near and far, past, present, and now. “Haere, haere, haere atu rā, okioki ai”.
After completing my education in Poutuarongo Ahunga Tikanga (Bachelor’s in Māori Law and Philosophy) and Poutuarongo Toiora Whānau (Bachelor’s in Social Work) at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Ōtaki, I had embarked on a journey from Ōtaki, home and into the heart of Ngāti Kahungungu.
E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā kārangarangatanga o Ngāti Kahungunu, tēnā koutou!
I am a passionate and dedicated wahine Māori committed to shedding light on the inequities faced by our kaumatua within Ngāti Kahungunu, Hawkes Bay. My journey as a Project Lead of Project Ākina here at Te Whatu Ora, Te Matau a Māui in support of Te Tāhū Hauora (Health, Safety, Quality Commission) from October 2022 - present is the driving force behind the passion of advocacy and storytelling of where this journey begins. My journey has involved extensive research, collection of data, interviews with patients, and their whānau and staff.
Project Ākina fosters a constructive environment for positive change. It strives to create a healthcare system for all to have equal opportunities to access and benefit from rehabilitation services in Te Whatu Ora, Te Matau a Māui, Hawkes Bay.
“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.” – “My success is not mine alone, but it is the strength of many”.

Her departmental roles included peer mentor, consultant appraiser, dermatology registrar educational supervisor, clinical lead and core membership of various multi-disciplinary teams. Apart from general and skin cancer clinics, as well as skin and nail-surgery lists, she had subspecialty clinics in laser dermatology, nail disease and male genital dermatoses. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians London, a member of various professional organisations and reviewed for different dermatology journals. These roles have now been eclipsed by being the only public dermatologist in Hawke’s Bay.
